Wastewater treatment package with moving bed

A biofilm-based biological process that, with the rotation of media in the reactor, creates a high contact surface for microorganism growth and treats wastewater with less space and simpler operation.

Introduction to the MBBR process

In biological wastewater treatment, the activity of microorganisms leads to the decomposition of organic matter and its conversion into more stable compounds. Biological reactors with moving bed or MBBR operate based on the growth of microorganisms on the media surface and, by creating a large contact area, increase the treatment efficiency in a compact volume.

This method is suitable for municipal and industrial wastewater with biodegradable organic load and simultaneously provides the advantages of both activated sludge and biofilm processes to the operator. Lightweight plastic media are floating and mobile within the reactor, and by being covered with biofilm, they provide a stable environment for the decomposition of organic matter and nutrients.

Key Advantages of MBBR

Less occupied space

MBBR reactors, due to the high biofilm surface area, require less volume and space compared to conventional systems.

Optimal energy consumption

With proper aeration design and no need to return activated sludge to the aeration unit, the operation of the system becomes simpler and more energy-efficient.

Stability under input shocks

Biofilm attached to the media has greater stability against sudden changes in organic load and flow rate than suspended biomass.

Reduction of sludge production

At the same capacity, the amount of excess sludge in MBBR systems can be less compared to conventional activated sludge.

Simple maintenance

The modular structure and reliable process reduce the system's need for complex maintenance and strict operational controls.

Capacity expansion capability

If necessary, capacity can be increased by developing the reactor or adjusting the amount of media and auxiliary equipment.

Suggested applications

  • Effective removal of organic materials and nitrogen compounds
  • Use in new water treatment plants or upgrading existing systems
  • Urban, sanitary, and industrial wastewater with biodegradable capability
  • Projects that have space limitations or require phased development
  • Rapid recovery of performance under sudden shock conditions

Design point

The most important feature of this system is the high level of contact between the biofilm and the wastewater. This very fact gives the designer flexibility in choosing an appropriate reactor and enables the system to have a stable and reliable performance without the need for complex control of the F/M ratio or MLSS.
